SUN 5/15 @ 1-6pm: Rotary DTLA Hosts Self-Guided Tour of the Arts District

See art and photography by @SouthBayMuse and @DowntownMuse to support the charitable work of Rotary DTLA during the business organization’s 3rd annual Incredible L.A. Lofts Tour on Sunday, May 15 @ 1-6pm. For only $30, this self-guided tour provides ticketholders with access to the amazing culture of the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles with exclusive visits to artist studios, neighborhood art institutions, fascinating residences, and the warm hospitality of RESIDENT (428 S. Hewitt St., Los Angeles, CA 90013), including an extended happy hour during 1-8pm and an official after-party with live music starting at 9pm (drinks not included as part of ticket price).

Proceeds benefit local and international service projects of Rotary DTLA. Recent projects included providing clean water, handwashing stations, and latrines to 1,500 students and their families at four schools and a clinic in Kenya; support of a community garden in Watts; and dictionaries for local schools. In addition to ticket sales, sponsors ensure the success of this event. Rotary DTLA thanks its sponsors Century Housing Corporation; Loftway; Downtown News; and RESIDENT. Through @DowntownMuse, I’m providing support for the tour through my social media channels AND I’m opening up my loft for attendees, too.

The self-guided tour starts at Art Share L.A. (801 E. 4th Pl., Los Angeles, CA 90013). Free parking for ticketholders is available at 321 S. Hewitt St., Los Angeles, CA 90013 across the street. Attendees are also encouraged to take public transportation. Take Metro’s Gold Line to Little Tokyo/Arts District Station and walk just a few blocks to Art Share L.A. (directions/map posted HERE).

EXHIBIT: South Bay Muse Snapshots at GUS Gallery

For those of you who follow my work online, you know that I take photographs of scenes from ordinary life as I walk my dogs early each morning wherever I am. For the past year, I’ve split my time between Redondo Beach and the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles (for the latter, I share images as @DowntownMuse). It’s been an amazing experience — both communities share some things in common and in more ways than the 20 miles that separate them, they are miles apart. However, just like the Arts District, I have found a community of artists and a place that inspires me every day.

I never imagined how my photography would be in the South Bay until I arrived. Like my work in Downtown Los Angeles, I still shoot as I maneuver my two rambunctious dogs in meandering ways along the streets where I live and work. I shoot the “ordinary” — the commonplace things that attract my attention as I’m walking. I never intend to shoot; i.e., I don’t go out with the goal of photographing. It just happens. Out of the many I take each day, I only share a couple online through my social channels on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook in my online persona as @SouthBayMuse.

Opening on Saturday, November 21, 2015 @ 4-8pm, my photography exhibition “SOUTH BAY MUSE: Snapshots of the South Bay by Melissa Richardson Banks” is on view in Redondo Beach through Thursday, December 31, 2015 in GUS Gallery at GUS Vintage Goods. Located in Riviera Village, the store opened at its location of 209 Avenue I, Redondo Beach, CA 90277 in August 2014.

Store owner, vintage purveyor, and designer Kim Stoneman — who is also a lifelong art aficionado and a former elementary school art teacher — showcases local artists in her GUS Gallery, which is located inside of her popular store.
