GO! Toyota Dream Car Youth Art Exhibits on View in the South Bay

Artworks by local youth who were among the U.S. finalists of the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest in 2014 and 2015 are now on view in three separate exhibitions in the South Bay. The first is at Phantom Galleries L.A. in Hawthorne. School teachers are invited to visit this gallery on Saturday, October 10; Saturday, October 17; and Saturday, October 24 during 2-4pm to pick up their FREE classroom art kits to help their students enter this year’s free national contest (while supplies last). If you are a teacher, RSVP HERE! The exhibition is on view during special events and by appointment only thru Saturday, October 24, 2015.

The other two exhibitions are on view during public hours in the lobbies at the Main Library and North Branch of the Redondo Beach Public Library, Thursday, October 1 thru Sunday, November 22, 2015. One of the finalists whose work is on display was also a national winner last year: Gene Whang, age 14, of Rancho Palos Verdes, California won the U.S. Bronze Award for his artwork “Cable Wheel Automobile.” The library exhibitions are being presented in the South Bay as part of the Redondo Beach Art Group (RBAG)’s 2015 Power of Art :: PoAX, an annual art show, which takes place this year on Friday, October 16 thru Sunday, October 18, 2015 at the Main Library.

Now in its 10th year worldwide, the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest is starting its 5th year of participation in the United States. The free contest is designed to inspire creativity in youth and encourage an interest in design and the automotive industry. Now through Monday, February 1, 2016, U.S. youth, ages 4-15, can submit their hand-drawn artworks featuring unique concepts of their “Dream Car.” Applicants are sorted into three age categories (4-7 years; 8-11 years; 12-15 years). Judging is based on three criteria: execution of concept; uniqueness; and artistry. For details, official rules, and entry forms, visit www.TFSintheCommunity.com/DreamCar.

GO! “Where the Magic Happens” Exhibit

Curated by Kristine Schomaker and presented by Shoebox PR, “Where the Magic Happens” celebrates Los Angeles artists who are going out of their comfort zone to create opportunities for themselves, establish their place, and thrive beyond the gallery system. With more pop-up and artist-run galleries, independent artist art fairs, artist run blogs and magazines and a plethora of organizations helping artists succeed on their own, artists are bypassing the gallery system.

The exhibition is on view Saturday, October 3 through Sunday, October 19, 2015.
